January 18, 2021

Bert Meijer

Prof. Dr. Meijer is a Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He first joined  TU/e in 1991 and has received  number of awards, including the Spinoza Award in 2001, the ACS Award for Polymer Chemistry in 2006, the ACS Cope Scholar Award in 2012, the Prelog medal in 2014, the Nagoya Gold medal in 2017, and the Chirality medal in 2018.  He has also served the community as a member of many editorial advisory boards, including CCS Chemistry, Angewandte Chemie, and the Journal of the American Chemical Society.  He is a member of several academies and societies, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was appointed to be a lifetime Academy Professor by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014.

Prof. Dr. Meijer joined the CCS Chemistry in its early beginnings as a founding member.  We sat down with Prof. Dr. Meijer (virtually) to find out what attracted him to the Editorial Board of CCS Chemistry and to hear what he had to say about this new journal.

I am extremely impressed by the rapid progress of the sciences in China.  The chemistry in China is now at the top of the world. With flagship journals for chemistry from Europe (Angewandte Chemie) and America (Journal of the American Chemical Society), it is a must to have one in Asia as well. Although my role as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board is limited and all credits go to the editors and the editorial team, CCS Chemistry has the true potential to become that third flagship journal in the world. It is my honor and pleasure to contribute to this success.”

What in your mind makes CCS Chemistry unique?

It will take some time to become as established as JACS and Angewandte, but CCS Chemistry has a unique philosophy as a fully open access, with no subscription required, and at no cost to the authors that contribute. It shows the immense and highly appreciated gift of the Chinese Chemical Society to  support the chemical sciences worldwide.

What stands out for you as reasons why an author should submit their articles to CCS Chemistry

“Every chemist likes her/his science to be noticed by as many colleagues in the field as possible, and that certainly includes colleagues in Asia. CCS Chemistry now provides a third worldwide flagship journal option for chemists to publish in, enhancing the ability to disseminate research around the globe. And CCS Chemistry’s free to publish and read open access philosophy, the opportunity for dissemination is even greater.”
